Before I start, Iâd like to point out that weâve been on the âmultipassionates-are-the-true-creativesâ propaganda waaaay before everyone else started talking about it. đď¸đď¸ But anywaaayyyy, now that the conversation is much larger with many more creatives weighing in, we thought we should revisit our original newsletter. And if you havenât read it yet, read it here.
Why passion is cool
To answer this question, Iâd like to bring in TimothĂŠe Chalamet⌠Or at least his speech, because we donât have the budget for him yet. But earlier this year, Chalamet took home the SAG Award for Male Actor in a Leading role for his role as Bob Dylan. In his acceptance speech, he mentioned wanting to be one of the greats and started a movement where people dropped their nonchalant façades. A month later, Adrien Brody took home the Oscar (after a 6-minute and 40-second speech) for his role in The Brutalist. Now, a lot of people drew comparisons between the two speeches, but only one of them left a lasting impact, and it wasnât Brody.
Firstly, there was a large disparity in the tone of voice of the two speeches. TimothĂŠe came in talking about WANTING to be great, going as far as to not only acknowledge the greats that have come before him but to emphasise the point that he has a long way to go. Adrien, on the other hand, spoke as if he were already great. And not to downplay Adrienâs achievements, but come on, humility? Hello?
Itâs not just the tone. Itâs the throwing of his gum at his partner, asking for the wrap music to be shut off so he can speak, and phrases such as âthis isnât my first rodeoâ that seem to counteract Brodyâs humble act. The actorâs 6-minute-long rambling disguised as a speech seemed disrespectful of othersâ time and the guidelines set for EVERYONE. The actions and the words donât seem aligned here, sir.
TimothĂŠe, on the other hand, went as far as to say this award is his ammo and an inspiration to get into the hall of fame he spoke of.
My reasons to compare the two speeches and dissect them are to highlight my point that passion makes you more inquisitive and empathetic. It makes you hungry, and hunger is good. You, as a creative, are a magician. You take this hunger to be the best, to create more art, or whatever your motivations are, and alchemise it.
You see, when you have passion, neither you nor your work suffers. You could have all the skill in the world, but your art will fall short if thereâs no passion because it translates into the art. Thereâs a reason why kidsâ arts, despite their skills (or lack thereof), still evoke a lot of emotion. Itâs why Superman (2025) was a blockbuster.
Passion is what will reward you. You can go years without any recognition, but the passion is whatâll keep you going. That isâand should beâyour primary motivation to create.
Why should you have multiple passions?
Okay, firstly, why not? Do you enjoy being confined to a box? Thought we were trying to get out of our boxes? 𤨠Having multiple passions is a testament to your inquisitiveness and curiosityâthe two things that make you a better creative. It also highlights that youâre not scared of failure or trying. With every new hobby, every new passion, you have to start somewhere and fail again and again and again until you get it right. At some point, you become far more terrified of not trying than failing.
And to expand on my earlier point about empathy. Different passions mean being able to relate easily to different people. It helps you forge meaningful connections with people at every stage of their journey because more likely than not, youâve experienced it yourself.
Consuming and creation can co-exist
Listen, I know everyone says âcreate, not consumeâ, but the way I see it, you can't create well without consuming because you need to feed your brain. Now, when I say consume, I donât mean brain-rot. I donât mean ballerina cappuccina. No. Iâll sound like an almond mom when I say it, but go on a diet, a mental diet. What that means is to consume mindfully and curate what you consume. It just isnât about the content either. You need to sit with it, mull over it and extract new ideas.
Digital Gardens
If youâre looking for ways to curate what youâre taking in, try looking into a digital garden. Itâs where all your ideas live and grow. Read something cool in a book? Straight to the garden. Itâs easy to track, and you can link all your ideas together. You can add visuals, text, whatever you want. And if youâre a writer, thatâs a treasure trove of ideas right there.
Becoming Dora the Explorer
âVariety is what surrounds us in nature; it is what we relate to.â It feels very fitting for what Iâm about to say. Your digital garden isnât any good if it doesnât have variety. Sure, you can talk about the same thing in different ways, but itâs still limiting you to that one box. You, as a creative, are meant to live with fluidity because that's how you think and step out of the box.
Art and creativity are inherently radical. In a world where youâre told to âpick a laneâ, you should carve your own lanes (yes, plural). The quote is Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. You SHOULD have a wide set of skillsâfor professional reasons and because it makes being pretentious more fun. đ¤ˇââď¸ You donât have to be the greatest in every field, just oneâs fine. Weâre not greedy here.
